Small distance
When visiting Bornholm, it's important to remember that the island is relatively small. Even though its diverse landscapes may create an illusion of grandeur, the distances between key points are comparatively short. For instance, Gudhjem is only 24 km away, Allinge 20 km, Dueodde 30 km, Svaneke 30 km, and Hammershus 22 km. By car, you can swiftly traverse from the exceptional cliffs in North Bornholm to Denmark's fifth largest forest, Almindingen, and onwards to the exquisite Dueodde beach in the southern part of the island, which has earned a spot on Lonely Planet's list of the world's best beaches.
When we're on Bornholm, we use the summer house as our base. We go on short trips to the island's attractions, which are never more than 30 km away. We usually end the day at the "world's best restaurant" with the "world's best view" – our own terrace.
Rønne - the capital of Bornholm
With a population of approximately 14,000, Rønne stands as the largest city on Bornholm and serves as the quintessential landing spot for tourists. Functioning as a market town since 1327, the city boasts a wealth of historical and cultural significance. Interestingly, Rønne does not embody the negative connotations often associated with tourist towns. Instead, it pulsates with life throughout the year, offering a vibrant array of local shops and cultural attractions that cater not only to visitors but also to the city's residents. Its modest size prevents an overwhelming influx of tourists during peak seasons.
Certainly! Rønne boasts a variety of grocery stores and fantastic shopping spots, presenting traditional craft shops and a market hall filled with Bornholm products. The town also offers a rich cultural scene, featuring galleries, museums, pottery workshops, a cinema, concert venues, and Denmark's oldest operating theater. For those seeking delectable bites, Rønne provides an abundance of cafes and eateries catering to diverse budgets.
Rønne is a stunning city, and visitors should particularly explore the charming older area around the church. This picturesque district features lovely half-timbered houses and quaint cobbled streets, creating a truly idyllic atmosphere. The town's church, Sct. Nicolai, is a must-see attraction in its own right.
